FOOD COMA

overview
For this project, I collaborated with Lara and Tiffany to create a game designed to be playable on both mobile and desktop platforms. In addition to developing the game itself, we also created promotional materials and finalized its deliverables.
Our game concept revolved around Peter, one of our teachers, and was inspired by a real-life event he experienced. Peter, known for his love of chips, was once so disgusted by the cafeteria’s “raw cinnamon rolls” that it became a memorable story. Drawing from this, we developed a game similar to Flappy Bird, blending humor with engaging gameplay. In the game, players must navigate through obstacles while avoiding “Baddies” (raw cinnamon rolls) and collecting “Goodies” (chips). The goal is to gather as many chips as possible while steering clear of the cinnamon rolls. When a player loses, they can enter their name, which gets saved in a database and displayed on a leaderboard showcasing the highest scores.

design problems and challenges
As the element and character designer for this project, one of the biggest challenges was creating visuals that balanced humor and clarity while maintaining an engaging and cohesive aesthetic. Designing the characters, including the “Baddies” (raw cinnamon rolls) and “Goodies” (chips), required thoughtful consideration to ensure they were visually distinct and instantly recognizable to players. In other words, it had to be "obvious" which element is the "Baddie" and which one is the "Goodie". Crafting these assets with a playful yet polished style was difficult to enhancing the game’s appeal.
my roles
In this project, my main role was to come up with the design style, and the character style. I was the one designing the elements of the game, such as the character, the elements (Goodies and Baddies), the background, and the logo.
process
brainstorming and ideas
- buildings will a solid color with buildings at the bottom
- character → flat illustration
- goodies: chips (a brand that Peter usually eats; Lays, Miss Vickie's), food (any yummy food)
- baddies: bad food, expired food, raw cinnamon roll (makes Peter disgusted)
- concept: similar to Flappy Bird, instead of the character avoiding the green pipes, it would be Peter avoiding the baddies (an element)
- fonts should either be playful and bubbly or a geometrical font
